Architect Jan Sterenberg (1923–2000) werkte in de overgangsperiode van strakke wederopbouwwijken met rijtjeswoningen naar bloemkoolwijken met woonerven. Zijn bureau in Ter Apel was een van de grootste architectenbureaus van Nederland en bouwde tussen circa 1950 en 1980 tienduizenden woningen door het hele land, van de stadswijk Lewenborg in Groningen tot Buytenwegh de Leyens in Zoetermeer en stadsvernieuwing in Zwolle.
