Environmental humanities: a rethinking of landscape archaeology?
Interdisciplinary academic research related to different perspectives of landscapes
2021 || Hardcover || S.J. Kluiving e.a. || Sidestone Press Academics
There has been an increasing archaeological interest in human-animal-nature relations, where archaeology has shifted from a focus on deciphering meaning, or understanding symbols and the social construction of the landscape to an acknowledgement of how things, places and the environment contribute with their own agencies to the shaping of relations.
This means that the environment cannot be regarded as a blank space that landscape meaning is projected onto. Parallel to this, the field of env...

2022 || Hardcover || Henry Skorna || Sidestone Press Academics
This work is an intensive study of the Neolithic deposition of copper objects from Neuenkirchen in North-East Germany. Landscapes and materialities of race, class, and gender in pre-emancipation Saba, Dutch Caribbean
2023 || Hardcover || Ryan Espersen || Sidestone Press Academics
This study aims to understand the materiality of Saba’s ideological landscape during its pre-emancipation colonial period. This is accomplished by understanding the dialectics, or inseparable relationships, between Saba’s geography, locally-situated ideologies of class, race, and gender in Saba’s social environment, and the processes behind these ideological relations that contributed to the material things that are found across Saba’s social landscape.
This provides insights into ar...

Tracing Technical Individuality in Production Processes
2024 || Hardcover || Moiken Hinrichs || Sidestone Press Dissertations
The aim of the thesis was to provide a framework for the identification and analysis of individual craftspeople in bifacial flint production. Flint production flakes from replications of South Scandinavian Late Neolithic daggers and Early Bronze Age sickles were the focus of the study, in contrast to research so far, mostly relying on finished and often exceptional pieces.
To identify technical traditions within technological systems and/or personal approaches to production, it is necessary t...

Grassroots Heritage Initiatives and Community Engagement
2018 || Hardcover || Csilla Ariese-Vandemeulebroucke || Sidestone Press Dissertations
A mosaic is the only image which can do justice to museums in the Caribbean. These profoundly social museums adopt participatory practices and embark on community engagement processes in order to embed themselves firmly in contemporary Caribbean societies.
This dissertation presents a mosaic of 195 Caribbean museums and the results of a unique research project...

The role of grave sets in Corded Ware and Bell Beaker funerary practices
2020 || Hardcover || Karsten Wentink || Sidestone Press Dissertations
Throughout northern Europe, thousands of burial mounds were erected in the third millennium BCE. Starting in the Corded Ware culture, individual people were being buried underneath these mounds, often equipped with an almost rigid set of grave goods. This practice continued in the second half of the third millennium BCE with the start of the Bell Beaker phenomenon. In large parts of Europe, a ‘typical’ set of objects was placed in graves, known as the ‘Bell Beaker package’.
