In Friesland zijn sinds het einde van de negentiende eeuw meer dan 160 zuivelfabrieken gebouwd. Ruim een derde van de dorpen en steden had zo’n fabriek. Net als de kerk werd de zuivelfabriek een sociaal referentiepunt, een plek die de mensen in en rondom dorp of stad verenigde in een gemeenschappelijke activiteit, namelijk het maken van boter en kaas.
