This publication is inspired by novelist Raymond Queneau’s 1947 book of the same title, in which Queneau tells a simple story in 99 different ways. Arjan de Nooy’s version applies an analogous principle to a single photographic negative. He took the picture in Paris in October 2007, with no special reason apart from the fact that it has a faint similarity with Queneau’s story. It shows a bus and two young men who appear to be having a conversation about a button. Over the years, De Nooy has revisited this particular image hundreds of times. This book extracts 99 of these variations.
