Van Le Corbusier tot MVRDV en van Diller+Scofidio tot Peter Eisenman: ontwerpers loerden al vanaf het einde van de jaren ’20 naar film, benieuwd of dit medium de representatie en communicatie van architectuur en stedenbouw zou kunnen verbeteren.

De films in Spots in Shots laten ons de gebouwde omgeving op een verrassende en verrijkende manier ervaren. Hun makers vertellen via omwegen over architectuur. De verhalen gaan niet zozeer over de materie, constructie en bekleding van gebouwen, maar veel meer over de perikelen, emoties en gedachten van reële of fictieve mensen in en rond die plekken.

Na een inleiding in het genre, geeft auteur Mélanie van der Hoorn inzicht in de canon van de korte architectuurfilm sinds het begin van de twintigste eeuw, gevolgd door een overzicht van waar de korte architectuurfilm ‘huist’: festivals, websites, museale collecties. In het tweede deel van het boek presenteert zij een selectie van 36 korte architectuurfilms vanaf 1990. Zij bespreekt hun totstandkoming, distributie en receptie, baserend op uitvoerige interviews met de makers.
