On love & liberty
- The incredible story of a young veterinarian s life in Liberia
`The night has fallen when we land in Robertsfield International Airport, and as I step out the cabin door the warm humid air hits me unexpectedly in an exciting and sensuous yet strangely comforting way. All around me are foreign sounds and unfamiliar fragrances. I want to stay here, I think. Oh! To live here and always feel this soft warm air around me, on my skin, in my hair, against my eyes.
But for a Dutch veterinarian with four young sons Liberia was to become much more than soft, warm air. It was, above all, a struggle to establish a clinic and keep it going through the brutalities of a military coup and the prelude to civil war. But it was, too, Liberian humor and laughter, the mysterious rainforest with its pygmy hippos, endless beaches with incredible surf, and a little Liberian girl called Esther. And it was love.
